About HoneyTree

Hello! We’re Jacob and Katie. Owners, Designers, Builders, and operators of HoneyTree.

As newlyweds Katie and I lived in Los Angeles and moved to Houston after starting our family. While living in these huge cities, we were always searching for the perfect rural getaway. So we hatched a plan to create these tranquil escapes in Katie’s hometown of Fredericksburg, Texas.

Once we’d purchased our perfect ten acres just outside of town, dense with live oaks and deer and armadillos, we scouted the ideal spot for a cabin overlooking the Palo Alto creek. We cleared the greenbriar and the cedar and the poison ivy only to realize that there was a big tree right where we needed to sink a pier. We turned that little problem into a pillar of our brand.

People tend to assume that Katie just designs and I just build, but as much as Katie would like it, the Chip & Joanna model wasn’t going to work for us. After clashing left and right on design preferences, we decided to take turns being lead designer on each new project. This arrangement has allowed us to have strong opinions and also stay married. And Katie also dives into the building process: rolling up her sleeves for sanding, tiling & furnishing — even hand-making many of the decor elements.

Now we simply steal each other’s design ideas, ask each other for advice and assistance, and give each other ruthless feedback so that each new space is the best version of itself as we continue to design and build.

Why We Love The Texas Hill Country…

What Jacob Says

I was raised coming to Fredericksburg several times a year: climbing to the summit of Enchanted Rock with my siblings, attending the parades on Main Street, watching the live reenactments at the National Museum of the Pacific War. Fredericksburg has always been a magical place for me, so when I first met Katie learned that this was her hometown I began to hope that someday we might move back and raise our family here… and I’m so thankful it happened!

What Katie Says

When I left Fredericksburg after high school, I never imagined I would move back. But after a decade spreading my wings, there was no place else I wanted to be. Fredericksburg has changed a lot since I was little — we no longer buy school supplies on Main street — but tourism has enabled locals to start businesses and restaurants and continue to make homes here. I’m grateful to live rurally where I can see stars and enjoy the quiet and the wildlife… and still have multiple places to go get a latte.
